Catholic Diocese of Cleveland installs Edward Malesic as new bishop
Bishop Edward Malesic was installed as the 12th bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland during a Mass at 2 p.m. on Monday.
The Mass took place in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland.
A ticket was required to attend.
Pope Francis appointed Malesic as the next bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland back in July.
Bishop Malesic succeeds Bishop Nelson Perez, who served in Cleveland from Sept. 2017 to Feb. 2020, and is now Archbishop of Philadelphia.
Rev. Donald Oleksiak had been serving as the Cleveland Diocese temporary leader since.
The 59-year-old Harrisburg, Pa. native comes to Cleveland from the Catholic Diocese of Greensburg, Pa., where he has served since July 2015.
Cleveland is not the Bishop’s only tie to Ohio.
The Catholic Diocese of Greensburg said he graduated from the seminary program at the Pontifical College Josphinum in Columbus.
You can watch a live video of Monday’s ceremony on the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland’s website.
